Lawn care enthusiasts, gather ’round! 🌱 Alan Titchmarsh, our favourite gardening guru, has some sage advice on achieving that lush, envy-inducing lawn all year round. If you’re wondering how often to mow, Alan’s got the answer.

His top tip? Avoid cutting your grass too short. During summer, aim for an inch in height, or an inch and a half if things are particularly scorching. Long grass blades mean your lawn stays green as they can better withstand dry spells. And if your lawn turns brown, don’t fret! It will bounce back once rain returns, so skip the watering can.

Now, when it comes to frequency, Alan suggests you mow at least once a fortnight. But for that truly thick lawn, make it weekly during mild conditions when showers are plentiful. As the heat ramps up, cut back to mopping every fortnight and let the grass grow a bit longer.
For those embracing No Mow May, Alan advises not to leave the mower in the shed for the entire month. Let some patches grow wild for insect friends, but keep a regular mowing schedule in other areas. And for you June mowers, continue to let parts of the lawn go wild for a while longer.
But remember, a mowed lawn isn’t unwelcome for wildlife. Birds find it easier to hunt worms in shorter grass. Just don’t forget to use organic fertilisers like blood, bone, and fish meal, steering clear of lawn weedkillers and inorganic options.
So, ready to get mowing the right way? Your lawn—and the local wildlife—will thank you! 🌿
