Travellers have cleared an illegal encampment at Chepstow Leisure Centre’s car park after Monmouthshire County Council intervened, much to the relief of local residents. The site had sparked concerns due to disruptions as the group settled in. However, the community moved on March 19, ahead of the planned eviction by council bailiffs.

Officials acted swiftly, assessing the welfare of both adults and children at the “unsuitable” location. They followed legal procedures, giving a week’s notice and scheduling a court hearing, though it wasn’t needed in the end.
Cllr Angela Sandles, the cabinet member for equalities and engagement, recognised the worries voiced by locals and leisure centre users, noting the smooth resolution. She highlighted efforts to work towards establishing transit sites throughout Wales, addressing the lack of legal stopping places, and pledged to continue advocating for solutions that minimise impact on communities.

The swift action and cooperation of everyone involved have been acknowledged as key in resolving the situation without incident. Keep an eye out for any developments as discussions with the Welsh Government continue.
