🚗 Traffic woes on the M4 around Newport have been a hot topic in Wales, and as the Senedd elections approach, everyone’s talking about solutions. The notorious congestion around the Brynglas tunnels is something many locals know all too well! So, what’s on the table?

Back in 2019, plans for a new six-lane motorway were scrapped for being too pricey and harmful to the environment. However, with elections coming up, ideas to ease the traffic back into the spotlight. Six political parties are weighing in, with half in favour of a new road and half not so keen. Labour, the Liberal Democrats, and the Green Party are all thumbs down on new roads, while Reform UK and the Conservatives are in favour of one – debates even stretch to whether any new road might be a toll road!

Plaid Cymru believes something needs doing and proposes a new road, aiming to build a strong case for it.
In the past, various colourful proposals were put forward, including the Black, Red, Purple, and Blue routes. The Black Route aimed to create a new 14-mile stretch going south, crossing the River Usk. It had a lot of fans but also a fair share of critics. Environmentalists highlighted its path through the Gwent Levels, an area cherished for its wildlife and natural beauty.
The Red and Purple routes were alternative paths suggested to minimise local impacts. Meanwhile, the Blue Route offered a different vision, enhancing existing roads instead. Some argued this would be a faster, cheaper fix.
With so many views and colourful options, it’s clear the M4 relief road debate is far from over! 🗳️ What do you think is the best way forward? Let us know in the comments! 💬
