Get ready for some high-flying gardening action at Powis Castle in Welshpool! Meet Dan Bull, the adventurous gardener with a knack for dizzying heights. He’s taking on what’s been dubbed the ‘world’s toughest gardening job’ by using a cherry picker to trim the castle’s iconic yew hedges. These 55ft towering green giants are part of a Baroque garden masterpiece that dates back to the 18th century.

Armed with a hydraulic lift and electric shears, Dan will spend around eight weeks shaping the hedges back into their signature cloud-like forms. It’s a meticulous task, but for Dan, it’s not just about the hard work – it’s the incredible views from the top and the satisfaction of seeing those hedges perfectly pruned that makes it all worth it.

The history of these majestic hedges is just as intriguing as the trimming process. Before modern technology, pruning required a team of ten men balancing on ladders for four months. Thanks to Dan’s efforts today, these historic hedges continue to wow visitors with their majestic beauty.

Originally a vision of the Herbert family, who lived in the castle from the 1570s, the hedges have undergone various transformations over the centuries. Lady Violet, wife of the fourth Earl of Powis, was instrumental in restoring the gardens, claiming they could become ‘the most beautiful in England and Wales’.
So, next time you’re visiting, make sure to marvel at the results of Dan’s daring work. The hedges at Powis Castle aren’t just plants – they’re an enduring piece of history, lovingly maintained for all to enjoy. 🌳✂️
