Andrew Castle, the voice of Wimbledon for an incredible 23 years, is hanging up his mic after an emotional final tournament. And it seems he couldn’t resist a cheeky farewell to his BBC employers!
In a candid moment on live TV, the 62-year-old commentator admitted he felt “booted” out, as the BBC plans to replace him with Andrew Cotter for next year’s tournament. Joined by fellow commentator John Lloyd, who is also stepping down, Castle took a nostalgic walk down memory lane, reminiscing about the years spent together covering the iconic event.
đź’¬ “Yes, I am a bit sad about it, of course. I have fabulous memories, even working with John,” Castle shared, adding with a touch of humour, “We’re being put out to grass, I mean that’s it. Booted.”
Lloyd, sharing in the sentiment, reflected on his time on air: “I’ve had a good run… You didn’t start that young, and you were great to work with.”
As Castle prepares to commentate on his final match, the men’s final between Zverev and Sinner, he confessed to feeling a mix of emotions. “I’m taking a few more pictures this time because I know it’s coming to an end. I’m very, very sad and disappointed… There’s a sense of grief that goes with this because there are so many memories.”
Despite the unexpected news and the sentimental goodbyes, Castle maintains gratitude for the years he’s been able to spend as the voice of Wimbledon, cherishing every moment spent watching history unfold on those lush tennis courts.
