Sad news from Merthyr Tydfil as an injured seagull has sadly died after being shot in the area of Troedyrhiw. A concerned resident spotted the distressed bird, dragging its wing and collapsing, on Rhodfa Terrace and swiftly alerted the RSPCA. The charity’s animal rescue officer, Ethan Griffin, confirmed the poor gull was suffering from a pellet wound, possibly from an air rifle, and had to be put to sleep for its welfare.

All wild birds, including seagulls, are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, making it illegal to harm them. Sadly, this isn’t the first time the RSPCA has dealt with such cases. Every year, they handle nearly 1,000 calls about air gun attacks on animals, including wildlife and pets like cats, who are often targeted when left unprotected.

Mr. Griffin expressed his dismay at these acts of cruelty, urging for stricter controls on air weapons. He believes that along with stronger regulations, better education around the use of air guns could help prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future.

Let’s unite in advocating for a kinder world where all animals are treated with respect. If you have any information, even the smallest detail could help bring those responsible to justice and protect more innocent creatures from harm.
