A devastating train crash near Bedford has left the nation shaken. On Friday evening, a tragic collision between two passenger trains led to the heartbreaking death of a train driver and left 89 others injured. This major incident unfolded south of Bedford, around the Elstow interchange, creating a scene of chaos and distress.
The collision involved two East Midlands Railway services: one traveling from Corby and the other from Nottingham, both headed to London St Pancras. While the exact cause is still under investigation, eyewitness accounts suggest one train may have hit another that was stationary or moving slowly on the same track. The impact was so severe that passengers were thrown from their seats, leading to numerous injuries, including broken bones and facial wounds.
The British Transport Police, along with emergency crews, rushed to the scene to assist the injured. Specialist ambulance teams and an air ambulance provided immediate aid, and local hospitals stepped up to support the affected. Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area as investigations continue.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has expressed deep concern over this tragic event, extending condolences to the family of the deceased driver and the injured. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander has promised a thorough investigation to understand how this tragedy occurred.
