In a tragic and heart-wrenching case, 27-year-old Daniel Gunter has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his two-week-old son, Brendon. The tiny infant, born prematurely, suffered catastrophic injuries at Yeovil District Hospital, leading to his untimely death just a few weeks after birth. The court heard horrific details of the assault, where Gunter, despite the warnings and pleas to handle the baby gently, continued to mishandle and overstimulate him. In a chilling display of denial, he dismissed police accusations as “pathetic” when they confronted him, pleading to see his girlfriend and baby even as Brendon succumbed to his injuries.

Emotions ran high as the family shared their immense grief and the future they had envisioned with Brendon, filled with hope and joy. Brendon’s grandfather poignantly spoke about the loss of a life full of potential memories, from first steps to family holidays. The court also revealed the extent of Gunter’s controlling and abusive behaviour towards Brendon’s mother, Sophie.

The verdict has brought some justice, yet the family still grapples with unanswered questions and the irreplaceable loss of their beloved Brendon. Senior Investigating Officer Det Ch Insp Nadine Partridge described the act as “diabolical,” extending condolences to the family for their unimaginable loss. This case stands as a grim reminder of the vulnerability of innocent lives and the importance of protecting them.
Our hearts go out to Brendon’s family, who have shown immense bravery and strength amid this tragedy. May this little angel rest in peace. 💔
