Gary Lineker, known for his football presenting on Match of the Day, faced criticism from former BBC golf host Steve Rider. In 2005, Lineker took over BBC’s golf coverage after Rider moved back to ITV, but it seems not everyone was thrilled with this change. Rider, who retired last summer, finally voiced his opinion on Lineker’s golf presenting approach, suggesting the football legend wasn’t the perfect fit for the unpredictable nature of golf broadcasts like the Masters and the Open. While Rider respects Lineker’s football expertise, he believes golf required a different touch.

Lineker’s outspoken comments about the Royal and Ancient Golf Club (R&A) in 2015 added fuel to Rider’s argument, and he remarked that Lineker’s style didn’t quite hit the mark for golf’s unique demands. Moreover, Rider hinted that Lineker’s eagerness for the role played into the BBC’s decision but didn’t translate into success behind the golf mic.

Since leaving the BBC in 2025, Lineker has focused less on TV, turning to podcasting with “The Rest is Football” alongside Micah Richards and Alan Shearer. This shift comes after a year of less screen time but hasn’t stopped him from staying involved in the sports world. While the BBC has opted for a team approach to present Match of the Day now, it’s clear Lineker’s journey in broadcasting remains as compelling as ever.
