🎉 Big News for Ex-Miners! 🎉

Former coal miners are set for a holiday treat with a significant boost to their pensions! Starting today, thousands will see an increase of about £100 in their weekly payouts. Thanks to a major decision announced at the recent Budget, the government is transferring a hefty £2.3bn reserve to the members of the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme (BCSSS).

And that’s not all—the payments are backdated to November 2024, with eligible members receiving an average lump sum of £5,500 today. This affects not just the miners but also those who worked in various roles at the pits—like our engineers, managers, and even canteen staff across the UK.
Ed Miliband, the Secretary of State for Energy and Net Zero, applauded this move, highlighting the justice it brings after years of campaigning: “Thousands will rightly see a 41% uplift in their pension just before Christmas.” 🎄
Cheryl Agius, chair of the trustees for BCSSS, called this a “historic moment” and celebrated the power of determination and collaboration. This move brings these pensioners in line with their former MPS colleagues, who have already benefited from similar adjustments.
This decision underscores the government’s commitment to listening to the voices of trustees, scheme members, and coalfield MPs—delivering a significant cheer for our former mineworkers this festive season! 🎊
Let’s celebrate this victory for all those who’ve toiled in the coalfields—your hard work and steadfast campaigning have paid off!
