A shocking incident unfolded in Newport’s city centre as a 19-year-old, Llewellyn Clifton, left his former schoolmate, James Groombridge, bleeding on Commercial Street. This disturbing event stemmed from an old school feud. Clifton accused Groombridge of “talking smack” before delivering a single punch to the face, resulting in a broken jaw and leaving Groombridge spitting blood and struggling on the pavement.

After the attack, Groombridge’s girlfriend witnessed the horrifying scene and called for help. An O2 shop staff member, who fortunately had medical training, provided immediate assistance. Despite delays, Groombridge was eventually taken to the hospital by his parents, where he was diagnosed with a broken jaw and other facial injuries requiring surgery.

Groombridge shared how this traumatic event affected him emotionally and physically, causing sleepless nights and panic attacks. He now avoids the town centre altogether.
In court, Clifton admitted to the assault, accepting the charge of wounding. He had no previous convictions and hopes for a fresh start as he enters his first year at university with aspirations to join the Army. Despite his ambitions, the court condemned the attack as “callous and cowardly.”
The sentence? Six months in a young offenders’ institution, suspended for 12 months, along with 180 hours of unpaid work and £1,000 compensation to Groombridge. Clifton must also complete a 20-day rehabilitation programme.
This dramatic story serves as a stark reminder of how past conflicts can unfortunately resurface in aggressive and damaging ways. Let’s hope for healing and lessons learned on both sides. Stay safe out there!
