Heartbreaking news from the world of football: Matt Beard, former Liverpool Women’s team manager, tragically died last year, and now new details have emerged.

During a recent pre-inquest review, his widow, Debbie Beard, revealed concerns about the impact his time at Burnley FC had on his mental health. She claims her late husband felt “bullied” by the club, and cited that his decision to leave was due to unhappiness at Burnley, not because he had another job lined up.

Matt Beard, who also managed top clubs like Millwall, Chelsea, and West Ham Women’s teams, was celebrated for his successful tenure at Liverpool, where he won back-to-back Women’s Super League titles. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 47 after suffering a hypoxic brain injury.
His family voiced concerns that his departure from Burnley in August was a turning point for his mental well-being. This echoes sentiments shared by his stepson, Scott Beard, who mentioned the timing of damaging social media posts as a contributing factor.
The senior coroner has stated that Burnley FC may be called to participate in the inquest, as anyone potentially linked to the circumstances leading to a death is granted “interested person” status. Further investigations will involve input from football agent Curtis Dawes and the League Managers Association, both of whom Beard consulted for support.
Matt’s funeral, held in Liverpool, saw 600 attendees, including football legends like Ian Rush and former England internationals Casey Stoney and Fara Williams, showcasing the impact he had on the football community.
