🏃♂️ From Olympic Tracks to Cardiff’s Shopping Aisles! 🛒

Meet Mateaki Mafi, a former Olympic sprinter and rugby league star who’s swapped his spikes for security gear! At 53, this Tongan legend is now a familiar face at Cardiff’s St David’s shopping centre as a night security guard, all while continuing his passion in sports therapy.

Back in 1992, Mafi was living the Olympic dream in Barcelona, racing alongside legends like Linford Christie. Although his Olympic journey ended in the heats, he has a treasured memento of the event—a framed photo with British sprinters.
Mafi’s athletic journey didn’t stop at the finish line. He scored a remarkable try during his rugby career with Warrington Wolves and even lined up for Tonga against Wales in 1997. Over the years, Wales became his second home, and he’s firmly set down roots in Cardiff.
But Mafi’s talents aren’t confined to sports. He’s also found love in an unexpected place—handling Neapolitan mastiffs. Alongside his wife Kim, he’s been dazzling the dog show world, bagging accolades at renowned shows like Crufts! 🐶
Reflecting on his journey, Mafi shares the bittersweet challenges of an athlete far from home, and how injury eventually led him to a new path. But whether it’s sprinting across the track, triumphing on the rugby field, or leading a majestic mastiff in the show ring, Mafi’s competitive spirit remains undiminished.
His story is a testament to embracing life’s twists and finding joy and purpose beyond the spotlight. Here’s to Mateaki Mafi, a true inspiration on and off the field! 🌟
