Rick Stein’s former wife, Jill, has opened up about a shocking car accident from their youth that left her with lasting hearing loss. The couple, who established The Seafood Restaurant in Padstow together, still manage the business despite their divorce in 2007 after 32 years of marriage.

Recalling the early days, Jill shared a glimpse into their life before fame changed everything. She reminisced about being the familiar face of their restaurant while Rick worked tirelessly in the kitchen. Back then, people didn’t even recognise him as he hadn’t become a TV sensation yet.

Meeting in Cornwall in 1968, their story began in a pub and took them through many ups and downs. During Rick’s time at Oxford, tensions arose, and a late-night drive ended in disaster. After a night out, Rick, under the influence, crashed into roadworks, seriously injuring Jill. “He did nearly kill me,” she revealed, recounting the terrifying moment an oil lamp shattered the windscreen. Despite her injuries, Jill bears no resentment. “I never blamed him, really. I don’t know why, but I didn’t.”
Following the accident, Jill underwent emergency surgery. She was left with permanent injuries, including hearing loss in one ear. This period marked a chaotic time in Rick’s life, filled with personal struggles. The couple went on to marry, have three sons, and build a renowned hospitality empire in Cornwall.
Their marriage may have ended, but Jill continues to be an integral part of the brand they created. Still contributing to projects like their newest cookbook, she remains a much-respected figure in British culinary circles.
