Former Lostprophets singer, Ian Watkins, met a violent end at HMP Wakefield after being attacked by a fellow inmate on Saturday morning. Known for housing notorious criminals, the prison was the setting for the fatal assault on Watkins, who was serving a lengthy sentence for child sex abuse crimes committed in 2013. Police confirmed they were called to the scene where Watkins was pronounced dead.

This isn’t the first time Watkins faced violence behind bars. Just two years ago, in August 2023, he survived a brutal assault within the same prison, suffering non-life-threatening injuries after being stabbed. The attack was later revealed to have been motivated by an unsettled £900 drugs debt and involved Watkins being held hostage by three other prisoners for six hours before officers intervened.

Watkins, who was 48 at the time of his death, left a disturbing legacy. He initially faced justice at Cardiff Crown Court in 2013 where he pleaded guilty to 13 child sex offences, including the rape and sexual assault of a child under 13, conspiring to rape a child, and possessing indecent images of children. He was sentenced to 29 years, with an additional 10 months later added for possession of a mobile phone in prison.

As police continue to investigate this latest incident, many are left reflecting on the shocking and depraved nature of Watkins’ crimes and how his prison life mirrored his turbulent past. Stay tuned for more updates on this evolving story.
