Nemanja Vidić, one of Manchester United’s most celebrated former defenders, has opened up about his desire to take on the daunting task of managing the club in the future. The Serbian football icon, who became a mainstay at Old Trafford under Sir Alex Ferguson, has told Sky Bet’s ‘The Overlap’ that he feels compelled by the challenge of reviving difficult situations—something he sees as central to the culture at Manchester United.

Vidić arrived at Manchester United in December 2005 for a reported £7 million and quickly made an impression with his no-nonsense style and unwavering commitment on the pitch. During his decorated stint at the club, he collected fifteen trophies—including five Premier League titles—underscoring both his personal success and his importance to the team. However, after a series of injuries and changes in the squad’s management, particularly under Louis van Gaal, Vidić’s time at United came to a close and he eventually retired after a spell at Inter Milan.

While enjoying coaching’s intellectual challenge, Vidić has so far prioritised his family life, especially as the father of three young children. Nevertheless, his admiration for Manchester United runs deep, and he has not ruled out a future in management. Speaking candidly, he stated: “If I was to manage or coach anyone, it would have to be Manchester United. I like things when they’re difficult and to change something from difficult to good, this is something I like to do.” It is clear that for Vidić, the allure of Old Trafford remains as strong as ever.
In discussing possible career paths, the former centre-back revealed an openness to a range of roles both on and off the pitch. “I’m open to an opportunity to be a coach, or to work in football as a Sporting Director, or even the Serbian President of the FA – that was the plan a few years ago – it didn’t happen but maybe it could happen in the future,” he explained. These comments highlight a versatile ambition, extending well beyond the traditional route taken by many retired professionals.
Now, Vidić is also channelling his energy into business, where he is striving for the same high standards that defined his football career. Concentrating on property development, he spoke with pride about his efforts: “Everything I do, I like to do the best I can, and to produce quality… to create good apartments and nice buildings, which I’m going to be proud walking in, and being proud of what I’ve built.” This sense of commitment to excellence seems to echo the tireless spirit he displayed on the football pitch.
Vidić also touched on the unique experience of watching his own son carve out a path in football. “It’s difficult watching my son play football because he’s playing centre-back and I see everything in terms of what he can do better. I’m the type of person that when they see, they have to say – I can’t keep it to myself. He’s learning now to accept that, but it’s good. I like watching him when I see his improvement, and in the last year, he has improved a lot,” the former captain shared.
Despite his own fame and success, Vidić insists that football is not a constant topic in their household. “We don’t really talk much about football. We don’t talk about how many trophies I won – I’m not much in the media. People are always saying, ‘Your son has pressure’ – I don’t think he has any pressure. He has an advantage,” he remarked, adding that the inevitable comparisons can provide motivation rather than strain.
With Manchester United facing periods of uncertainty on and off the pitch in recent years, the idea of a club legend like Vidić returning in a leadership position offers a compelling prospect for supporters craving a revival of the club’s traditional values. His expressed readiness to face complex challenges, combined with his strong emotional connection to United, ensures that any potential future involvement would be awaited with considerable interest both inside and outside Old Trafford.
As Vidić continues to explore his options across business and football, Manchester United fans will no doubt follow his journey closely, hopeful that one of the club’s most formidable defenders could, one day, make a triumphant return in a new and influential capacity.
