🌞🐦 Heads up, garden lovers! As the UK enjoys this glorious bank holiday heatwave, let’s not forget about our feathered friends. Bird feeders are a fantastic way to attract wildlife to your garden, but during these hot spells, they can become hotspots for spreading diseases.

Experts are sounding the alarm on trichomonosis, a parasitic condition that can devastate bird populations. This nasty bug finds it easier to spread in warm weather through saliva and contaminated food or water.

So, what’s a bird lover to do? The RSPB advises cleaning your feeders at least once a week. Use hot soapy water, scrub away any droppings or stale food, and disinfect the surfaces. And be mindful of where you hang them—avoid placing them directly under trees or areas where birds frequently roost to stop contamination from droppings.
The material of your feeder matters too! Wooden feeders are cosy hideouts for bacteria due to their porous nature, while regular plastic ones might break down in sunlight. Consider investing in recycled plastic feeders—they’re smooth, easy to clean, and weather-resistant.
A little bit of cleaning can go a long way. As Kym Barlow from TDP says, “A few minutes each week can make a real difference to the birds visiting your garden and help protect local wildlife.” So, give your feeders a once-over for any wear and tear, and keep those birds chirping happily!
🧹✨ Happy feeding and cleaning, everyone! Let’s keep our garden birds safe and our gardens lively. 🌿🌸
