Giant marine creature stranded on Welsh shoreline, sparking concern and curiosity

A gigantic surprise is lurking on the sands of Carmarthenshire’s Cefn Sidan Beach! The incredible carcass of a 70ft fin whale, the second-largest animal on the planet, has been left to naturally decompose on the beach. Discovered earlier this year, the whale’s body was determined to be beyond the point of a post-mortem examination by marine experts. Instead, nature is taking its course with this enormous sea creature.

Photographer Liam Matthews was taken aback when he stumbled upon the massive remains during a weekend beach trip with his friend. Describing the location as eerie and mostly deserted, the sight was unlike anything he had expected to find during their casual exploration of Pembrey Beach.

The stranded whale’s final resting place is in a particularly isolated part of the coast, making for a haunting yet fascinating scene for the rare few who venture there. The UK Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme notes that, due to its size, the exact timeline for its full decomposition remains uncertain.
