Exciting changes are afoot in Swansea! 🏗️ Archaeologists have uncovered fascinating remains at the historic Hafod-Morfa Copperworks, including wheel pits, rolling mill trenches, and furnace bases dating back nearly 200 years. This incredible find has sparked a redesign of a major development project at the site.
To preserve these internationally-important archaeological finds, a new construction technique called micro-piling will be used. Instead of the original raft-slab foundation, designers will be drilling 93 micro-piles to ensure both the protection of history beneath and the strength of the new link building above.
Swansea Council’s ambitious plans aim to breathe new life into the area with restaurants, cafes, retail, and exhibition spaces. The project also includes the restoration of the historic Vivian and Musgrave engine houses, built in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
With support from a UK Government grant, anticipation is high as the team works diligently to bring this vision to life. Local councillor Allan Jeffery shared excitement from his recent boat trip along the River Tawe, where locals showed enthusiasm for the revival of this historic area.
