**Chaos in Ceredigion: The Goat Dilemma**

Could you imagine goats running wild in your garden? For residents in Ceredigion, this scenario became all too real. Christopher Wise from Betws Ifan found himself in hot water after his adventurous goats repeatedly went on countryside escapades. Despite countless warnings from the council to fix his fences, the goats continued to wander into private gardens, farmland, and even onto the roads, causing chaos for the neighbours and risks for drivers.
The sage advice from Ceredigion County Council’s public protection team started in 2024, but by March 2025, nothing had changed. Wise explained the delay in repairs by blaming hot weather and even badgers for damage to his boundary. But when public safety is at stake, excuses can only go so far!

The saga reached the courtroom, with Wise pleading guilty for violating a Community Protection Notice. The court showed leniency at first – giving him 12 weeks to mend his fences. But by summer 2025, sightings of roaming goats persisted, trampling crops and ignoring boundaries once more. Something had to give.
Fast forward to February 2026 – Wise found himself back in court, once again admitting fault — this time for ignoring a Criminal Behaviour Order. His sentence? A 12-month Community Order, requiring 15 rehab activity days, a £80 fine, a £114 victim surcharge, and £300 court costs.
Councillor Matthew Vaux emphasised the importance of safety: “Straying livestock endanger motorists and neighbours. We’ll take action to protect our community.”
Lesson of the day? Take livestock management seriously! 🐐🚙
