David Denyer, a seasoned flower and garden expert, shares why the first frost is often the trickiest: “Your garden might still look lively, but those tender new growths are full of water. When temps drop, that water freezes and expands, potentially damaging your plants.”

🌿 Which plants are most at risk? Look out for half-hardy bedding plants like begonias and dahlias. Plants in pots, especially those in terracotta or thin plastics, are more susceptible since the soil inside cools faster than garden soil. Even hardy perennials can get in trouble if their roots are exposed.

🌼 How can you protect your plants? Cover them overnight with fleece, cloches, or an old sheet to trap warmth. Don’t forget to uncover them in the morning to let air circulate! Move potted plants and hanging baskets up against a wall to benefit from the heat retained by bricks and stones. Adding mulch around your plants helps insulate the soil, keeping moisture and temperature steady.

🚫 What not to do? Avoid fertilising before a frost; those soft new growths are prone to freezing. Also, steer clear of late evening watering—wet soil freezes faster. Early morning watering is best. And if frost strikes, resist trimming away any blackened leaves immediately! They act as a protective layer.

Taking these steps can help keep your garden thriving despite the incoming frosts. Stay warm and happy gardening! 🌻🥶
