Health Authorities Fined Nearly Six Figures for Violating Anti-Smoking Regulations

A mental health unit is under fire after it failed to enforce its no-smoking policy, leading to a hefty near £100,000 payout by the health board responsible. The Hafan y Coed facility at Llandough Hospital didn’t keep track of patients’ smoking habits, despite repeated warnings from the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service. During inspections last spring, officials found patients lighting up in inappropriate areas, along with evidence of cigarette misuse.

This failure to ensure proper management and recording of the smoking policy contributed to a concerning incident where a patient set fire to their surroundings, prompting an emergency evacuation. Although this incident wasn’t directly linked to the lack of recorded checks, it highlighted the urgent need for better risk management.

Despite the health board’s financial struggles, with a deficit of £56.5 million, they have been fined £25,000 and must also cover court costs of £70,000. The board has since implemented a strict “no smoking” policy across all its premises and is undergoing external audits to address broader governance concerns.
