🚨 Carmarthenshire Food Inspections Lapse 🚨

There’s a bit of a pickle in Carmarthenshire as many food venues have gone years without a hygiene check! With a staggering 2,280 food businesses like cafes, pubs, and care homes under its wing, the council is struggling to keep up due to a shortage of qualified staff. They’re offering up to £70 an hour for temporary inspectors, but demand is high across the board.
Despite efforts, hitting inspection targets remains “highly unlikely,” officials admit. This backlog includes three of the highest-risk category A sites and over 200 category C establishments overdue for inspections. Cllr Colin Evans expressed serious concern, highlighting how quickly things could go awry.

An eye-opener from Scores on the Doors revealed certain locations hadn’t been inspected since 2019! On average, there’s a 16-month delay for category C and over three years for category D and E premises. But don’t fret too much; many low-risk venues can undergo alternative surveys to ensure safety.
The council insists they’re committed to enforcing food law effectively given the circumstances. Meanwhile, UKHospitality assures us that the industry is keen to maintain top-notch hygiene, with an impressive 76.6% of food businesses already scoring a perfect 5 for hygiene.
The Food Standards Agency acknowledges the challenge, urging any council falling behind to reach out for help. As new businesses sprout up, the workload increases. Stay tuned for updates on how Carmarthenshire tackles this hefty task! 🍽️
