A community is left in shock after a terrible tragedy outside a local pub in Appleby Magna, Leicestershire. David Darke, a beloved 66-year-old grandfather, lost his life due to a single punch delivered by 37-year-old Nathan Gothard. An evening meant for festive cheer turned into a nightmare just days before Christmas, leaving a family to endure the unimaginable loss.

Leicester Crown Court has sentenced Gothard to ten years for manslaughter. The judge highlighted the senseless nature of the violence, emphasising how a moment’s rage overpowered any sense of rational thought.

Mr Darke, a devoted father to three daughters and a skilled engineer, is remembered for his kindness and courage. His only ‘crime’ that night was standing up against intimidation. Despite Gothard’s initial claims of self-defence, the court heard differing accounts. Prosecutors revealed he had been creating an uncomfortable atmosphere with “unwelcome advances” and hostile behaviour.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, Mr Darke helped Gothard to his feet following an earlier scuffle, only to be attacked moments later. The family, watching the legal proceedings unfold, bravely shared their grief in court. They described Mr Darke as someone who wouldn’t ignore wrongdoing and highlighted the generosity he showed, even in death, by donating his organs to save others.
Detective Inspector Kevin Hames praised the family’s resilience throughout this painful journey. He reminded everyone that Gothard had multiple chances to walk away but made choices that have forever changed lives.
As the community mourns this devastating loss, let’s remember David for the positive impact he had on those around him. His legacy lives on through the lives he saved, a testament to the man he was. Rest in peace, David Darke.
