A coroner has ruled that the death of Paul Danan, well-known for his role in the Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks and a series of reality television appearances, resulted from misadventure following the intake of multiple drugs. The 46-year-old actor was discovered unresponsive at his residence in Brislington, Bristol, in January, bringing to a close a career often marked by both public acclaim and personal struggle.

Danan rose to fame as Sol Patrick in Hollyoaks, featuring from 1997 to 2001. He later became a familiar face on UK television, participating in ITV’s Celebrity Love Island and the reality hit Celebrity Big Brother, among other programmes. His sudden death generated an outpouring of tributes from former colleagues and fans.

Details presented at an inquest at Avon Coroner’s Court, held in Flax Bourton on Wednesday, revealed that emergency services were called to Danan’s home on 15 January. His partner, Melissa Crooks, was the person who identified his body. The hearing, presided over by Assistant Coroner Deborah Rookes, proceeded as a documentary inquest, relying solely on written statements rather than live testimony.

Alexis Camp, the coroner’s officer, told the court: “Mr Danan was found unresponsive at his home address. Emergency services attended and confirmed he had sadly passed away. A post-mortem was conducted, and samples were taken for further analysis. No note was found at the scene.” The absence of a note and the circumstances led the coroner to record a verdict of misadventure, a legal term used when death results from an unintended consequence of a voluntary action.

Notably, Danan’s death occurred just one day before he was due to appear in court, following charges of cocaine and cannabis possession, as well as for allegedly driving under the influence of drugs in Warrington, Cheshire. These legal issues underscored long-standing difficulties with substance misuse, a topic Danan often discussed openly—a rare level of candour among television personalities.

Throughout his career, Danan did not shy away from discussing his ongoing battles with addiction. In public appearances and interviews, he reflected on multiple periods of rehabilitation and a lifelong commitment to recovery. He joined ITV’s Celebrity Love Island in 2005 and 2006, and featured in the reality travel series Calum, Fran and Dangerous Danan, where he formed close bonds with fellow stars like Calum Best and Fran Cosgrave.

Calum Best, son of late football legend George Best, shared his memories online, describing Danan as one of the “funniest, kindest, and most authentic people” he’d encountered. Best said, “Life wasn’t always easy for him, but he faced it with such heart and courage, and that inspired so many of us.” Similar tributes came from EastEnders actor Dean Gaffney, who called Danan “a heart of gold.”

Danan never hid his hope for a return to Hollyoaks, frequently lobbying on social media for the opportunity. His professional pursuits included launching a podcast, The Morning After With Paul Danan, which ran between 2019 and 2023, and founding a drama workshop during the COVID-19 pandemic that later expanded across several cities in the UK.

While his acting portfolio included appearances in Celebrity Coach Trip and The Kevin Bishop Show, his personal journey was also well documented. In a 2019 appearance on The Jeremy Kyle Show, Danan spoke candidly about his early encounters with drugs and the hard work required to remain in recovery. Legal troubles, including a 2010 conviction for drugs and public order offences, saw him referred for support and fined in Stevenage Magistrates’ Court.

Independent Creative Management, representing Danan, expressed sorrow in a statement issued after his death: “It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of Paul Danan at just 46 years old. Known for his television presence, exceptional talent, and unwavering kindness, Paul was a beacon of light to so many. His untimely departure will leave irreplaceable voids in the lives of all who knew him.”

The coroner’s conclusion brings to an end not just the legal inquiry, but also a chapter in British television marked by both remarkable artistic output and very public personal challenges. Danan’s willingness to lay bare his struggles resonated with many, leaving a legacy that extends beyond the screen.
