🌊🏡 Riverside Ruckus: Planning Drama in Abergavenny!
An Airbnb owner in Abergavenny has hit a snag after Monmouthshire Council denied his planning permission for a new riverside patio. Geoff Burrows, who’s owned the property for 23 years, originally had a patio built over a decade ago. But after Storm Claudia wreaked havoc last November, he thought it was time to spruce things up with some repaving and a cosy timber shelter.
Unfortunately for Geoff, the council wasn’t so keen. Citing lack of sufficient landscaping plans and flood risk concerns, the planning committee turned down his application. The main worry? The patio extends a little too far over the riverbank, which is a special site for nature conservation.
Ward Councillor Tudor Thomas came to Geoff’s defence, saying he acted “in good faith” and has plans to restore the riverbank – a move that could boost habitats for wildlife. But while Natural Resources Wales hasn’t weighed in, the council’s flood risk officer echoed the decision: the riverbank isn’t the place for such structures.
Despite Geoff’s assurances that he’ll take care of the riverbank, without planning permission, he’s stuck. As one councillor put it, images of the storm damage highlight exactly “what not to do on a riverbank.”
