Imagine returning from a relaxing holiday to find your front door broken down and a hefty fine waiting for you. Unfortunately, this could happen if you’re not clued up on the rules regarding home alarms.

So what’s the deal? If your property falls within a “designated alarm notification area,” you must nominate a keyholder and register their details with your local council within 28 days of installing an alarm. Otherwise, you could be in violation of the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005, which tackles noise pollution. 💥

Did you know that 33% of us assume alarms going off are false? But that doesn’t stop them from being incredibly annoying and disruptive, with some alarms ringing out for hours if not dealt with – especially if you’re not home to turn them off! 😡

Local councils actually have the authority to enter your property and silence an alarm if it’s been wailing for more than 20 continuous minutes or an hour intermittently. They can even charge you for the locksmith and contractor costs involved, and issue fines for noncompliance.

Remember, your nominated keyholder has to:
🔑 Have the keys to silence the alarm;
🕒 Live nearby;
🤝 Agree to be the keyholder;
🏠 Not be you if it’s your home.

To avoid any unpleasant surprises, check if your property is in one of these designated areas by reaching out to your local council or visiting their environmental health webpage.

Don’t let a rogue alarm ruin your holiday! Get sorted, stay compliant, and enjoy your time away worry-free! 🌞✈️
