Sad day for Bradford as the iconic Kirkgate Shopping Centre is set to close! 🛍️ After 50 years of being a retail hub, this award-winning shopping complex is preparing to shut its doors for good on June 18. Formerly known as the Arndale Centre, it first opened in 1976 and became a beloved landmark known for its unique brutalist design.

Over the years, the Kirkgate has faced increasing challenges, especially with the opening of the Broadway Shopping Centre in 2015, which drew many shoppers away. Despite attempts to preserve it as a historic site, efforts to obtain listed status failed, as Historic England deemed it “lacking architectural flair.”

Many of its shops have already closed or announced their final trading days. New Look bid farewell on June 8, while Pound Bakery shuttered just before that, marking the end of an era for Bradford’s shoppers. Even Get Free Books charity shop is set to close on June 13.
Bradford Council has decided to demolish the centre as part of a broader initiative to revitalise the city centre—focusing on a vibrant mix of leisure, business spaces, homes, and cultural hubs. With new venues like Bradford Live and Darley Street Market bringing fresh energy to the area, there’s excitement for the city’s future.
Of course, for many locals, the Kirkgate holds fond memories. It’s the end of an era but also the beginning of a new chapter for the city. Share your memories and let us know what you’ll miss most about the Kirkgate Centre in the comments! ❤️ #Bradford #KirkgateCentre #EndOfAnEra #NewBeginnings
