🚢 Big Changes at Swansea Marina! 🚢

After 44 years, the iconic Helwick lightship has set sail from its home at Swansea Marina. This much-loved piece of maritime history, weighing a whopping 225 tonnes and built in 1937, has been a part of the Swansea waterfront skyline since 1982. It’s been serving as a fascinating museum piece, but time has taken its toll and it’s now in “advanced deterioration.”
But don’t worry, it’s not goodbye forever! We’re thrilled to share that Helwick is off for some much-needed TLC in a dry dock restoration, thanks to the council’s dedication to preserving our local history. The restoration is expected to cost around £360,000 and once complete, Helwick will return, ready to stand proudly and continue telling its tales to future generations.

The historic vessel was once stationed on the Helwick Bank, marking a navigation hazard for seafarers until it retired in 1977. On Thursday night, the Rhossili Coastguards captured the poignant moment as the ship was gracefully towed through the marina and lock gates, making its way to Swansea Dry Dock.
This isn’t just about Helwick, though. The council is also gearing up to preserve other significant vessels in the collection, including the Olga and the Canning, with exciting plans potentially bringing the Olga back to life on the water! Meanwhile, efforts are underway to ensure the marina remains safe by addressing potential pollution risks, including dealing with abandoned vessels like The Seamark.
Stay tuned for updates on Helwick’s restoration journey and let’s celebrate the rich maritime heritage that makes Swansea Marina so special. ⚓💙
