Perched atop the cliffside on the Paragon, just steps from Tenby town centre and the Esplanade, the Imperial Hotel boasts one of Wales’ most iconic coastal vistas. Overlooking the golden sands of South Beach, the location has long attracted visitors eager for breathtaking views and a taste of Tenby’s vibrant atmosphere.

The property’s storied history stretches back well before its hotel days. Originating as a series of terraced homes known as Belmont Houses around 1870, it was later owned by the Earl of Limerick before its conversion into a hotel in 1905. Since then, additions such as a lounge with panoramic sea views in the 1920s have cemented its status as a cherished feature of the Tenby landscape.

Following a change in ownership last year, the Grade II-listed hotel was purchased by Crest Hotels, a Bristol-based operator with experience revitalising historic venues across England and Wales. Their acquisition, reportedly for £2.5 million, marked the start of an ambitious push to modernise the guest experience while paying homage to the building’s character. Crest Hotels already manages several hotels in Wales, including the Metropole Hotel and Spa in Llandrindod Wells, offering insight into the demands of restoring landmark sites.

Over the past year, nearly 60 guest rooms have been revamped, many providing even more stunning views of the Welsh coastline. Public spaces within the hotel, including the bar, restaurant, and the front façade, have also been upgraded, melding contemporary comfort with historical charm.

One of the most significant aspects of the refurbishment is the forthcoming spa complex, due to open its doors in 2026. Promising facilities such as a steam room, sauna, jacuzzi, and a panoramic gym, the spa is expected to appeal to guests seeking relaxation and wellness, broadening the Imperial’s year-round appeal. This addition, management suggests, will help position the hotel as a destination throughout all seasons, not just the busy summer months.

Mark Wylde, Crest Hotels’ director of guest experience, explained the vision driving the redevelopment: “The Imperial has always been an icon in Wales. We wanted to create a four-star experience that welcomes everyone—a social space where guests can relax and soak in those unparalleled views.” Wylde highlighted the group’s desire to make the venue a benchmark for hospitality excellence in the region, blending accessibility with a touch of luxury.

Tracy Webb, the hotel’s general manager, has witnessed the transformation first-hand. She remarked, “The investment from Crest has brought much-needed care to the hotel. The new spa and upgrades will offer something distinct for Tenby, and visitors have been steadily increasing since the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Perhaps reflecting the changing demands of modern travellers, the Imperial has embraced a dog-friendly policy, even providing canine guests with treats upon arrival. In the redesigned restaurant, locals and tourists alike are invited to sample a new, wide-ranging menu, while the freshly refurbished rooms are ready to greet guests for the impending summer surge.

With Tenby remaining one of Wales’ most beloved seaside towns, the Imperial’s transformation arrives at an opportune moment. Local tourism has experienced a marked revival post-pandemic, and the hotel’s refreshed facilities, including the anticipated spa, are set to enhance the town’s offering further.

Looking ahead, Mr Wylde and Ms Webb share a common goal: to see the Imperial once more become the beating heart of Tenby’s hospitality scene—restored, rejuvenated, and ready to welcome generations of visitors. As holidaymakers prepare to flock to the Welsh coast, the Imperial Hotel stands poised for a new era: proud of its heritage, but unafraid to innovate for the future.
