In a shocking turn of events, Gift Oladele, a 24-year-old Italian-born Nigerian, has been sentenced to 25 years for the rape of a teen in Wrexham. Despite being previously saved from deportation due to his human rights, Oladele’s horrific actions have landed him in prison once again.

Back in 2022, Oladele was jailed for the false imprisonment of a woman in Manchester, but managed to avoid deportation by arguing successfully at a tribunal. He claimed he had never visited Nigeria and would face insurmountable challenges if deported. Despite the gravity of his first offence, his plea that deportation would disrupt his life in the UK swayed the decision in his favour.

The recent attack unfolded when he forcibly led a 19-year-old woman into the woods, telling her, “This will teach you a lesson not to trust strangers.” The brave victim reported the crime to her parents despite Oladele’s threats to keep it silent. The court heard of her harrowing ordeal, which left her with severe emotional distress, anxiety, and physical bruising.
Prosecutors revealed that Oladele’s phone contained evidence of a longstanding interest in forced sexual acts. Judge Simon Mills, recognising the severity of Oladele’s actions, handed him an extended sentence, comprising 17 years in custody and the rest on licence. Additionally, indefinite restraining orders were placed to protect the victim.
The Home Office expressed its condolences to the victim and reiterated its commitment to deporting foreign criminals. Recent government reforms aim to make the UK less attractive for illegal migrants and bolster deportations. This case highlights the crucial balance between human rights and public safety.
