You won’t believe what gas workers stumbled upon during a routine inspection in Droylsden! Imagine their shock when they found a vintage Dinky Toy car lodged inside an old gas pipe. This tiny treasure, believed to be a model of a Second World War Daimler Scout car, has been hiding in the pipes for nearly 80 years!

The discovery was made by Stockport-based contractor PMCE on behalf of Cadent, the company in charge of the gas distribution network. Shane Mulhern, operating the camera for the inspection, couldn’t contain his surprise when the miniature motor appeared on screen. He first spied the toy while checking for obstructions before installing new pipes and later managed to retrieve it. 🚧🔍

Dinky, known for its replica cars between the 1940s and 1960s, adds to the historical charm of this find. Mulhern mentioned that foreign objects occasionally turn up in these old pipes—he’s previously unearthed trousers and even a 1957 newspaper in similar situations. 📰👖

Cadent assures us that while the toy car didn’t disrupt gas flow, it adds a unique chapter to the quirky tales of gas infrastructure in the UK. From footballs to golf clubs, it seems our gas pipes hold more secrets than we imagined! ⛳⚽

As Cadent pushes forward with a massive £75m project to modernise up to 385km of pipelines by March 2026, who knows what other historical gems might surface? 📅💼
