Meet Janine Ley, a new mum who thought she was “losing my mind” after the birth of her daughter. Far from the blissful experience she expected, Janine faced severe anxiety and panic attacks, leading her to question everything. Despite counselling and medication, she felt trapped in a cycle of overwhelming emotions and self-doubt.

A series of personal challenges only worsened her mental health, ultimately resulting in hospitalisation. Janine describes the period as a whirlwind of anxiety, mood swings, and crushing intrusive thoughts. She was convinced she was unravelling – until she discovered a life-changing fact.
Janine began making connections between her darkest moments and her menstrual cycle. Her groundbreaking revelation led to a diagnosis of PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder), described as PMS “on steroids.” This condition explained the years of struggle, transforming confusion into clarity. Doctors believe that perimenopause has intensified her symptoms, making every day a challenge. Despite the hardships, having a diagnosis has been transformative, offering Janine strength and understanding.

Janine credits her incredible GPs, an online support group, and her loving family for standing by her side. She encourages all those experiencing similar symptoms to seek help and remember that self-care is essential, not selfish.
April is PMDD Awareness Month, a time to spotlight this severe condition affecting many women. Janine’s story is one of resilience and the importance of seeking answers and helps when you feel lost. Remember, you’re not alone in this battle.
