A shocking new report highlights a growing issue in Welsh hospitals—patients are being treated in corridors and other unsuitable areas, putting their safety and staff wellbeing at risk. Nurses are calling for an end to this dangerous practice, known as “corridor care,” which they say jeopardises patient safety and staff morale.

Over half of those who have needed NHS care, or have had loved ones treated, report witnessing healthcare delivered in these inappropriate settings. The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has criticised the Welsh Government for allowing this troubling trend to continue, pointing to serious implications for patient dignity and outcomes.

A recent survey of NHS Wales hospital staff reveals that a staggering 61.8% experience corridor care at their workplace. One nurse warned that treating patients in these unsafe environments increases risks, such as self-harm, due to unsecured objects and lack of privacy. Another frontline nurse added: “Emergency departments are struggling to function, and patients are being harmed. Corridor care must stop.”

The RCN’s Nicky Hughes stated, “This isn’t just due to winter pressures or staff shortages—it’s a sign of a system in crisis.” Despite the dedication of healthcare workers, they are unable to provide the quality care patients deserve in these makeshift spaces.

Responding to the report, the Welsh Government insists that care in corridors is unacceptable and promises efforts to eliminate it. They’ve invested over ÂŁ200m to ensure smoother patient transitions from hospitals to community care.
