What started as a simple sore shoulder turned into a life-changing event for Lee Brain, a school caretaker from Caerau, Bridgend. Initially shrugging off the ache, Lee noticed a small lump in February while organising a school event. By April, the lump had grown rapidly, prompting his wife, Emaleen, to urge him to visit the GP. The devastating diagnosis? Sarcoma—a rare cancer affecting connective tissues.

Lee’s life was thrown into turmoil, but he had just one week before his daughter Cody’s wedding and the arrival of his first grandchild. Determined, he underwent a gruelling six-hour surgery at Morriston Hospital. Expert surgeons performed a microsurgical reconstruction, taking tissue from Lee’s thigh to his shoulder.
Surrounded by his family and buoyed by new milestones—his daughter’s wedding and the birth of his grandson, Cian Lee Joseph—Lee’s spirit remained unbroken. Despite the challenging journey through recovery, physiotherapy, and upcoming radiotherapy, he remains optimistic, thanking the dedicated staff and urging others to stay positive.

As July’s Sarcoma Awareness Month unfolds, Lee shares his experience to encourage others to promptly seek medical advice for any unusual lumps. He knows all too well that early detection can be life-saving. In a bid to raise awareness, Lee will join the Rare But Real Walk in Swansea on August 22, organised by the South Wales Sarcoma Service and Sarcoma UK.
Lee’s story is a crucial reminder: if you discover a rapidly growing lump, especially if larger than five centimetres or painful, visit your GP immediately. Early checks can make all the difference.
