Ahmed is one of seven men found guilty this June for their roles in the systematic grooming and abuse of vulnerable teenage girls in Rochdale back in the mid-2000s. These young victims were treated as “sex slaves,” subjected to horrific abuse by a group mainly comprised of taxi drivers and market stall traders. The judges have set tomorrow for the sentencing of these men.

The list of convicts includes Mohammed Zahid, who was the only one to abuse both victims, and now possibly faces a lifelong sentence. The defence has argued for Zahid, emphasising his previous family life and quoting his plea for a humane sentence. Ahmed, described in court as a married father-of-three, is expected to have a tough time upon release, with little hope for employment or a future.

Other defendants like Kasir Bashir and Roheez Khan, who have also been entangled in these heinous crimes, have tried to put forward mitigating circumstances, such as lack of previous convictions or difficult integration into UK society. Meanwhile, the legal representatives have attempted to showcase the ‘good character’ attributions for men like Nisar Hussain, whilst acknowledging their heinous acts, which involved rape and sexual assault.

The series of heart-wrenching trials have shed light on the dark underbelly of a vile network that preyed on innocent lives. As the court reconvenes soon to finalise their sentences, the community remains hopeful for justice to be served. What’s your take on this case and the struggle for justice in such severe crimes?
