A recent inspection at HMP Parc in Bridgend reveals that drugs are still far too accessible. Despite efforts from G4S and probation services, the struggle to control the flow of illicit substances remains a significant issue. The latest report points out that 24% of recent random drug tests came back positive—down from 31%, so some progress is happening. But there’s more work to do!

While the prison’s steps to combat drug smuggling, like installing secure windows to thwart drones, were praised, other areas need urgent attention. The facility is grappling with a worrying lack of staff, leading to significant limitations in inmates’ daily routines. This means they’re stuck in their cells for long stretches, missing out on vital education and work opportunities.

Equally concerning is the persistent level of self-harm among prisoners, ranking as the second highest in category C prisons. Although incidents are routinely investigated, more needs to be done to address underlying causes like stress.

Violence isn’t on the decline either. A rise in recorded incidents, particularly in Block B, underscores the need for more effective officer engagement with prisoners. Staffing hurdles, including retention and vetting delays, are a core issue—leaving prisoners in limbo and progress stagnant.

The prison notes that they are “encouraged” by the strides they’ve made in tackling drug issues and that staffing levels are on the rise, aiming to better educational and rehabilitation access.
