A tragic mystery at the University Hospital of Wales is leaving everyone puzzled. Donald Gough, a bowel cancer patient, unexpectedly passed away after his operation. The inquest has revealed that he had high levels of insulin in his system—despite not being diabetic—raising many questions about how it happened.

Police and doctors are baffled by this unexplained case. There’s no direct evidence of any intent to harm, but the situation has been deeply distressing for Mr Gough’s family. They had to endure a week-long inquest, hearing details about the unexpected complications during and after the surgery. Coroner David Regan acknowledged how tough the process has been for them, urging them to rest over the weekend before the inquest continues.
The medical team behind Mr Gough’s operation insists there was no reason for him to have been given insulin, and they all deny any mistakes in administering drugs. His operation was deemed low-risk, yet he never regained consciousness. The case took an emotional turn when Dr Benjamin Holst admitted leaving without giving the necessary handover, making it harder for other medics to understand why Mr Gough didn’t wake up.

Despite thorough investigations by the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and South Wales Police, the cause of Mr Gough’s sudden decline remains unclear. While the Crown Prosecution Service has been involved, there’s currently no ongoing criminal investigation. The inquest will continue next week to hopefully shed more light on this deeply concerning matter.
