Lions coach Andy Farrell recently shared a heartfelt behind-the-scenes story involving his son, Owen Farrell, and the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia. Initially left out of the squad due to a tough season with Racing 92, Andy wanted to include his son from the get-go. However, Owen, facing fitness challenges and uncertainties after the 2023 World Cup, initially turned down the chance to join the squad.

In a tearful conversation, Owen expressed concerns about the timing and the potential impact on both his game and his father’s role as head coach. Andy wasn’t alone in his wish to see Owen don the Lions jersey again—every fellow coach backed the experienced fly-half/centre. But ultimately, the decision was left in Owen’s hands.

Later, after an unfortunate injury to Elliot Daly, who broke his arm, Owen joined the Lions squad. Making his mark once again in the international rugby scene, he even captained the team in a stellar win against a First Nations & Pasifika XV and played an essential role in securing a 2-1 series victory.
This candid revelation, now part of Andy’s book, highlights the deep personal and professional challenges coaches and players often navigate. It’s a story of family, resilience, and the spirit of rugby.
