The in-depth survey covered various topics including patient safety, team morale, and staff confidence in raising concerns. A notable issue was whether employees would trust the care provided by their own organisation if a friend or relative required treatment.

Leadership is listening! Chief Executive Abigail Harris emphasises the need for a supportive environment where staff can thrive. “Everywhere we go, we hear the concern: ‘We don’t have enough resources,’” Harris noted, highlighting that this is a common theme across healthcare systems. A push for a culture change is on the cards, aiming to boost organisational trust, reduce workload pressures, and enhance staff involvement in decision-making processes.

In response, Tina Ricketts, Executive Director of Workforce and Organisational Development, calls for positive change. She appreciates the feedback for its potential to improve working conditions and wants to address feelings of “learned helplessness” and low trust levels. A detailed report with proposed actions is expected soon.

Despite challenges, Harris celebrates the brilliant achievements happening daily within the health board, stressing the importance of striking a balance in communications with staff to ensure their efforts are recognised.

It’s clear the Swansea Bay University Health Board is committed to fostering an environment where NHS heroes can be their best selves and perform their best work every day. 🏥✨
