According to PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Tom Phillips, “This is a deeply tragic case and we recognise the profound loss to Sarah’s family, who are currently being supported by specially trained officers.” He added that initial inquiries are underway and that the police remain at an early stage of the investigation. “Our thoughts are with all who knew and loved Sarah Montgomery, particularly her young children and extended family,” said Phillips.

In connection with the incident, police have arrested a 28-year-old man on suspicion of murder. The suspect is currently in custody, assisting officers with their enquiries. Police have appealed to anyone with information that could be relevant to the investigation to come forward.

Chief Inspector Yvonne McManus, who leads policing in the North Area, acknowledged that news of a suspected murder would cause inevitable distress throughout the community. “Understandably, local residents may feel anxious or concerned following these developments. We’ve maintained a visible presence in the area, and cordons remain in place as officers conduct further investigations,” she explained. Inspector McManus encouraged any member of the public with concerns, or seeking support, to approach police officers directly.

She emphasised that tackling violence against women and girls remains a core priority for the service. “The devastating impact of violence of this nature is far-reaching – it affects individuals, families, and the wider society,” she commented. The Chief Inspector also reaffirmed police commitment to engaging directly with the community, not only to progress the investigation but also to offer support and reassurance.

In recent years, violence against women has been increasingly highlighted as a major public safety concern in Northern Ireland and across the UK. This latest tragedy, involving a young pregnant mother, is expected to reignite calls for more resources and measures to protect vulnerable women and girls in society.

Detectives are urging anyone who believes they may have witnessed anything suspicious in the Elmfield Walk area on Saturday afternoon, or who may have relevant information, to contact the PSNI by calling 101. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to independent charity Crimestoppers.

As the investigation continues, the community of Donaghadee has been left in shock. Police are working to piece together the circumstances surrounding Sarah Montgomery’s death, while also focusing on supporting the grieving family during what has been described as an incredibly difficult period.

Officials have stated that local support services are being made available for anyone affected by the incident, and further updates from police are expected once preliminary enquiries have been completed.
