The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) interim report highlights that the train moved past a red signal near Elstow at 5:15pm, but it remains unclear what signals Mr Burton received from the train’s automatic warning system (AWS). Initial data reveals the train was traveling at 76mph with brakes applied just nine seconds before impact, reducing its speed to 49mph at the moment of collision.

A staggering 162 people suffered injuries, with 102 needing hospital attention. Currently, 53 are still hospitalised, including eight in critical condition.

EMR’s Managing Director, Will Rogers, expressed deep sorrow and committed to collaborating fully with ongoing investigations. Despite this tragedy, the UK rail network is still regarded as one of the safest worldwide, with extremely rare incidents compared to annual journey numbers.

Investigations will continue to scrutinise the factors at play, and EMR vows to prevent such tragedies moving forward. Thoughts and condolences go out to Shaun Burton’s family and everyone affected by this incident. 🙏

In the meantime, let’s hope for peace and recovery for all involved, as authorities work diligently towards finding answers and ensuring public safety. Stay safe, everyone! ❤️
