Heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Helen Williams, a 43-year-old woman who tragically died in police custody in Caernarfon. After spending 33 hours at the station, where she was initially detained for a return to prison, Helen’s unexpected death was found to be drug-related, following an inquest held in Caernarfon.

North Wales Police referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as a routine measure. Their investigation found no evidence of police wrongdoing; officers were cleared of any contribution to her unfortunate passing.

Helen was arrested in Bangor and taken to Caernarfon police station, where she was under regular observation and received medical attention. Although she was scheduled to return to prison on May 24, 2024, her health deteriorated, and she was scheduled for hospital transport. Sadly, despite first aid efforts and paramedics on the scene, she passed away the same afternoon.
Investigators meticulously reviewed CCTV, body-worn footage, and police documentation. They concluded that the officers and custody staff acted according to protocol and provided timely, appropriate medical interventions.
IOPC Director Derrick Campbell stated, “This was a tragic case. We found no evidence of police contributing to Ms Williams’ death. Officers followed proper procedures throughout her detention.”
The story serves as a sobering reminder of the delicate and challenging situations faced by law enforcement and those in their care. May Helen rest in peace, and may her situation bring awareness and understanding to similar future cases.
