Jockey Toby McCain-Mitchell has been hit with a 10-day suspension after his horse, Top Of The Bill, took a tumble at the final fence during the prestigious race at Aintree. The 24-year-old debutant, carrying a special lock of Red Rum’s hair, faced criticism for not pulling up his fatigued mount in time.

Top Of The Bill, a 50-1 outsider trained by Nigel and Willie Twiston-Davies, was in a great position during the race, even leading at one point. But an unfortunate misstep at the 25th fence saw the horse slip back in the field and eventually fall.

Thankfully, quick-acting vets were on the scene. Top Of The Bill, along with fellow fallers Quai De Bourbon and Mr Vango, received immediate care. All horses were safely returned to the stables for further observation.

Aintree stewards conducted an inquiry into whether McCain-Mitchell should have pulled up earlier. After reviewing the footage, they decided on the suspension for allowing the horse to continue when it had tailed off.
