Previously deported, Araghi made headlines as he claimed asylum due to fears of persecution back in Iran after converting to Christianity. Yet, repeatedly skipping key asylum interviews has left authorities questioning his intentions.

Judge Jonathan Taaffe expressed disbelief that Araghi wasn’t arrested in Kent upon his second arrival and puzzled over why the asylum seeker, familiar to authorities, wasn’t detained sooner. With a cheeky nod, the judge suggested the UK’s hospitality offers more allure than other countries.

Araghi’s journey to the UK wasn’t a small feat. From Iran to Turkey, then onto Greece and Germany, before making the perilous Channel crossing from Calais. Intercepted again on August 7 on a small boat, his asylum application was later rejected due to missing information.

His defence acknowledged the crossings were illegal but insisted on his acceptance of responsibility. With a one-year sentence handed down, Araghi is now a prime example of the UK’s tightened measures on illegal migration. The government vows sweeping reforms to make it easier to deport individuals without the right to reside.
