Mark Wheeler, 48, from Cardiff, isn’t laughing now after being sentenced for brutally assaulting his partner. The shocking incidents included him strangling her until she passed out and hitting her with a vodka bottle. Their year-long relationship was described as “extremely toxic,” marked by Wheeler’s violent behaviour.

The first horrifying attack happened after a drunken argument in October. Wheeler strangled his partner, laughed at her distress, and pushed her to the floor, accusing her of faking her unconsciousness. The abuse didn’t stop there. Just days later, he attacked her again, calling her derogatory names, pulling her wig, and again resorting to violence with a vodka bottle.

Despite his partner’s repeated attempts to reach out to authorities, she had withdrawn complaints in hopes of salvaging the relationship. It took Wheeler being arrested and standing before Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court to face consequences for his actions. In court, the victim bravely shared her personal ordeal, expressing the mental and physical scars left behind by these attacks.
Judge Jeremy Jenkins made it clear that Wheeler’s actions were the “ultimate act of cowardice,” and sentenced him to 30 months in prison. His alcoholism was mentioned, but it was no excuse for the vicious assaults.
