Drama unfolded at the Senedd as politicians from Labour, the Green Party, and Plaid Cymru staged a walkout following comments by Reform UK Senedd member Joe Martin. The controversy arose during a debate on whether to cut £9m in international spending by the Welsh Government. Reform UK argued that this money, currently a small fraction (0.03%) of the total budget, is better spent on local initiatives rather than “vanity projects” abroad. Martin didn’t hold back, criticising schemes like sending solar-powered canoes to Peru and funding beekeeping in Uganda, even going so far as to suggest that this money might as well be burned!

Heledd Fychan, a government minister, seemed to lead the walkout, with fellow members following suit. The Presiding Officer had started the session urging for respectful debate but Martin’s fiery rhetoric and direct jabs at Plaid Cymru’s policies, left tensions soaring. The heated atmosphere had some likening the debate to more of a pub argument than parliamentary discourse!
Reform UK’s Jason O’Connell called out the walkout as a disappointment, claiming politicians should face tough discussions head-on. Meanwhile, Plaid Cymru’s response has been equally stern, accusing Reform UK of undermining Welsh values of tolerance and respect.

The clash has sparked conversation about the delicate balance between international aid and domestic investment. What’s your take on the spending debate? Should Wales tighten its purse strings on global projects or continue to support them? Let’s hear your thoughts!
