Got a TV licence visit? Know your rights! πΊπͺ

Legal whiz Daniel J. ShenSmith has spelled out what you can do if a TV licence officer turns up at your door. With a nod to the iconic John Cleese advert, the BBC is keeping the spotlight on TV licences, featuring a new musical version starring Romesh Ranganathan!

Did you know? BBC TV licence numbers have dipped by over half a million in a year, with 3.7 million households saying, “No need for one here!” This is a 62,000 increase and could mean more visits from TV Licensing officers as viewing habits shift. βπ

According to Daniel, if youβve checked and don’t need a licence but keep getting those pesky letters, you don’t have to panic. On his YouTube channel, BlackBeltBarrister, he shares that you can ignore these letters and politely ask any visiting agents to leave your property. But there’s a catch! π¨β
π The key: No warrant, no entry. If a magistrate or sheriff has issued a warrant to search your premises due to reasonable suspicion of watching TV without a licence, obstructing their lawful execution could lead to consequences. So, without a warrant, agents can’t legally enter your property β locked gate or not!
And here’s a cheeky tip: You can even put a sign up revoking anyoneβs implied right of access β whether itβs at your front door or outside the gate. Think of it as your personal “Do Not Disturb” notice for your home. π‘π«
