π From Premier League Star to Overcoming Personal Battles π

Former Liverpool and Swansea City midfielder, Jonjo Shelvey, recently opened up about a tough chapter in his life. After moving to Turkey in 2023 to join Caykur Rizespor, the isolation took a toll on his mental health, leading to an addiction to sleeping pills. Living alone in a quieter city meant long hours with nothing to do, and he found himself relying on pills to escape the loneliness.

Shelvey shared on the Undr the Cosh podcast, βI went to Turkey and lived by myself. It was the hardest thing Iβve ever done.β With limited social activities around, Shelvey resorted to sleeping tablets to pass the time post-training, highlighting how solitude can affect one’s mental state.

Even after a move to the lively city of Istanbul in 2025, where opportunities for socializing increased, the struggle continued. Shelvey admits he preferred the pills over other vices that could negatively impact his career, like alcohol.
Though his career seemingly stayed on track, the addiction severely affected his personal life, distancing him from his children. Thankfully, it was his partner’s unwavering support that helped him fight through these tough times. Shelvey acknowledges, βIt destroyed my relationship with my kids because I was never present. I was lucky that my missus is such a good woman that she kicked it out of me.β
His story is a gripping reminder of the hidden battles faced by professional athletes and the powerful influence of love and support in overcoming them. πͺπ
