In a surprising twist, plans to install a defibrillator and bleed kit at Carmarthen’s historic Nationwide Building Society branch have been turned down by Carmarthenshire Council. The decision was based on concerns about the visual impact on the iconic Grade II-listed building, famously adorned with a giant coffee pot!

Despite the life-saving potential of defibrillators—known for reviving hearts without any medical training—the council cited the cabinets’ potential to disrupt the architectural beauty and heritage of the conservation area.

Melanie James from Heartbeat Trust UK, who has championed the installation of numerous bleed kits around the region, expressed disappointment over the missed opportunity for vital community resources. Highlighting their necessity, she stated, “Lives are being saved daily by these devices. They must be prominent and easily accessible to truly make a difference.”

Nationwide’s original proposal aimed to place the defibrillator prominently on the building’s front and a bleed kit on the side. This would ensure visibility and accessibility, especially in busy footfall areas like Guildhall Square.

The council, however, required more detailed assessments and plans to weigh the potential impact. For now, the hearts in Carmarthen’s community will have to wait.

Here’s hoping for a solution that marries preservation and progress! 🤞
